Ford’s Farley Says ‘Real World’ Mileage Key to Avoid Owner Anger

Business Week -- Ford Motor Co.’s global marketing chief says the automaker is focused on high “real world” fuel efficiency in its vehicles after a California woman won a case against Honda Motor Co. for failing to meet mileage claims.

Heather Peters, owner of a 2006 Civic Hybrid, won $9,867 in small claims court in Los Angeles last week, alleging Tokyo- based Honda overstated the model’s fuel economy. Honda has said it will appeal the ruling, and that the car’s efficiency rating was determined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“As fuel economy becomes more important, all the manufacturers are looking to be more dramatic in their advertising claims,” Jim Farley, told reporters today in Las Vegas at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention.

Doesn't the mileage data come from the EPA? Why blame the auto maker if it is wrong?

it's always been a joke to have a "sticker mileage" that does not reflect real world driving. Taking the vehicle on a controlled, flat course w/out bad weather and driving it for about a mile or two w/out any real conditions and then extrapolating the mileage cannot ever reflect what the vehicle gets under real conditions.

Remember the article yesterday? Popular Mechanics ran Real World test and got better mileage than the EPA stated.

Any mpg number is just a representation of one driving scenario. Use it for reference.

Just watching a new CNBC piece on fracking. This topic is getting hotter.

I think that woman just wanted some $$, so how better than to claim her car didn't get the advertised gas mileage! I don't know that I've ever gotten the advertised mileage, but it didn't make me go file a lawsuit!!!

The EPA ratings seem to be very conservative. If you cannot achieve your car’s rating you must be driving under very adverse conditions or you need to study up on efficient driving techniques.

There is no way to be "real" in the milage claims - Some people idle longer than others, some have a heavier foot.

Me? I've been getting as much as 10% better gas milage than my sticker says.

The EPA should use a more realistic measure of fuel economy. It would show that all vehicles are actually worse than the manufacturers claim (especially hybrids and electric vehicles).

ericbcire said: "Torte reform is needed."

I agree and those pastries should get their just desserts too. LOL.

Seriously, tort reform is not the way to go. Just imagine a negligent/reckless driver or doctor killing your loved one, and then you learn that tort reform has capped the value of that precious life at a couple hundred thousand, protecting the wrongdoer. I agree there are flaws in the legal system, but tort reform will cause more problems than it solves.
